Currently in Los Angeles — September 20, 2023: More marine layer

Plus, a spectacular northern lights display this week.

The weather, currently.

More marine layer

LA sunshine: 2. LA marine layer: 2.

Such has been the scoreboard over the last few days, with a June-like morning marine layer giving way to sunny skies by afternoon. Temperatures were once again on the cool side, with 70s all across the board whether you were in Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, or Woodland Hills.

Expect a similar situation Wednesday, though the marine layer might be even more stubborn. After that a trough will slide into our area, which will bring down temps and further strengthen the inversion. Even Palm Springs might not reach 90F on Thursday.

What you need to know, currently.

There was a spectacular display of northern lights — aurora borealis — on Tuesday, caused by a direct hit from particles sent Earthward from a solar explosion.

We’re in the middle of a multi-year peak of activity on the sun, so northern lights should be more common than in previous years. And the best time to see them is during the fall and winter, when the temperatures aren’t yet too cold, and the nights are getting nice and long.

One of my favorite websites, spaceweather.com, will keep you up-to-date on upcoming chances to see the aurora.
