The weather, currently.

Some lingering marine layer in the morning

And just like that, we’re back in action. It’s great to be writing about the wild climate in the City of Angels again for Currently Los Angeles.

In LA metro, the warm up will be more gradual as onshore flow abates away from the coast. Expect temperatures in the mid to upper 70s away from the coast today once the marine layer burns off. The warmest and sunniest days right now look to be Tuesday through Friday, with temps around either side of 80.

While non-Angelenos might laugh at me, we’ve had quite a bit of exciting weather in the past few years, starting with an unusually wet 2022-2023 La Niña winter season, the remnants of Hurricane Hilary late last summer, and then a classically wet 2023-2024 El Niño winter. A whopping 12.66 inches of rain fell at USC’s campus in February alone. Keep in mind that much of sea-level LA metro receives between 12-15 inches of rain on average in a whole year. And don’t even get me started on the persistent May Gray of last month.

But let’s not restart this newsletter with doom and gloom.

The good news is that at least away from the immediate coast, June Gloom will give way to a decent early summer warm up as a ridge builds in for the west coast, sending places like Las Vegas into the triple digits, with even Mark Twain’s San Francisco getting in on the action.

Back home in LA, I’m tracking some potential early monsoonal moisture for the weekend. Stay tuned.
