Currently in Los Angeles — August 2, 2024: Super sunny and warm weekend

Plus, independent climate journalism needs your support, now more than ever

The weather, currently.

Super sunny and warm weekend

Friday might be another convective day before most of that monsoonal activity shifts north towards Bakersfield and the Central Valley. Over the weekend, expect a return to completely clear skies and warming temps, with around 90 for LA metro, and mid to upper 90s for the valleys.

A good amount of showery and thunderstorm activity in the mountains north of Palm Springs Thursday morning, with some light rain in Palm Springs as well. But much of that activity died out as it moved further west. The monsoon is in full swing.

What you can do, currently.

A Media Matters analysis found that last year — the hottest calendar year on record — network coverage of climate actually declined in the US. What’s worse, just 12% of reports about climate change mentioned fossil fuels as the driving cause. The media still reported on extreme weather, but stopped short of making the climate connection.

Independent climate journalism like Currently is needed more than ever. And this year, with all of these weather warnings already underway, we’ll unfortunately have plenty of opportunities to do better.
